Omniclonal® Antibody Technology

Characterization of protein targets is key to determining their potential therapeutic function. Antibodies have proven to be a valuable tool in the characterization of protein targets because they can be used to localize the protein in tissues, to quantify the protein in body fluids, and to modulate the biological activity of the protein by, for example, binding to the protein and blocking its natural function.

Traditionally, antibodies have been derived from the immunization of animals, either through the harvest of antiserum containing antibodies or the development of monoclonal antibodies generated by hybridoma technology. Over the past few years, naïve libraries generated from phage display technology enabled the development of antibodies in a shorter timeframe.

Biosite® Discovery’s Omniclonal technology combines the strength of both technologies, generating antibodies with affinities typically attained only through hybridoma development, but doing so with the speed and diversity of phage display technology. The process can now be performed in a high throughput manner for thousands of targets. Moreover, this technology allows Biosite to generate antibodies to targets that have traditionally been difficult such as membrane proteins (GPCRs, ion channel proteins, 4- and 5-transmembrane proteins) or targets that are 100% conserved. The key features of Omniclonal technology provide an unparalleled advantage to partners seeking an efficient means of gaining access to high affinity antibodies for use in drug research.
